formed two short pins for mount- ing the piece on the car end. I glued a Tichy Vertical Brake Staff (#3003) bracket to the end of the car and mounted the round wire piece around it. Next, the brake platform from a Tichy AB Brake set (#3013) was trimmed to just the width of the ratchet. That piece was rotated 90 degrees from its normal position and glued to the top of #3003 with the hole in the ratchet aligned with the slot in the bracket. The wire staff and brake wheel from #3003 com- pleted the fixture. No extra brake details were added to these opera- tions roster cars because they are not visible when the cars are on the layout. Walthers Proto trucks with metal wheels replaced the kit trucks. Uncoupling levers com- pleted the detailing. I used flat black from a spray

can to paint the cars, and then applied custom NEB&W decals. The flatcars were numbered for the prototypes they were modeled after. I brush-weathered the cars with acrylics and powdered mar- ble dust from Proctor, Vermont, where the Rutland cars saw ser- vice. A protective coat of Krylon flat finish completed both cars. The marble slabs are pieces of

plaster the club cast years ago. Leery of the durability of bonding chalky plaster to the minimal sur- face area on top of the raised deck timbers, I drilled holes into the timbers and glued in short brass pins, and then gave the plaster several thin coats of matte me-

dium to seal the surface. Lightly pressing the bottoms of the plas- ter pieces onto the pins marked their locations. Slightly oversized holes were drilled at the marks,

and the slabs were glued with a pliable adhesive caulk for a re- silient bond. The new cars look good running with those that John built.

Brake Details Tichy detail parts and a piece of bronze wire roughly approximate the brake appliance on the model. (Rivets not added yet to the car end.)

Other than the railroad name, the custom decals on NEB&W 2755 match Rutland 2755.
