Additions Part of the fun of kitmingling is being able to add parts to a struc- ture that would logically be placed there. I added an external covered stairway to this building, further removing it from its stock appearance.
and India ink. Then I thinned the red color to act more like a wash than a finished paint. I am very pleased with the results. I had a lot of problems with the clapboard siding warping, even with the bracing. I normally spray paint wooden models; however, this combination really soaked into the wood. Of course, when this happens on one side of the wood, it will do its thing and warp all over the place. To counter this, I put some hefty books on top of the walls and let them dry over- night. All was well in the morning! I glued the four walls together
and then added the bump-out and enclosed stairway from the
kit. I had to make some chang- es here also, but that was due to parts that weren’t shipped with the kit and not the remodeling. The roof came next. I wanted
to keep the busy look of the origi- nal roof, so I duplicated two of the gable dormers to place on the new side. I very carefully notched the other two sides of the cupola, so it would fit on the four ridges. I used tarpaper roofing to finish the roof and added fascia on the gable sides of all the roof areas. I did this by cutting scale six-inch strips from the leftover sticky- back wood material shipped by Bar Mills. I also changed the name to Yard Brewing since there
aren’t any shipyards in the Colo- rado Rockies! The finished building turned
out better than I had expected. It looks great as a stand-alone struc- ture, and all four sides have some interesting things to catch the eye. Because of the time period I model, I am considering adding a stable to one of the ends. Before I do that, I will have to place the building on the layout and make some adjustments to my track configuration. If all goes well, then the next time you come to see the Fremont & South Park Railroad, you will see the stables and its inhabitants as part of a beautiful addition to my layout.
