CALL FOR ENTRIES: IET’S 2015 YOUNG WOMAN ENGINEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Finding and celebrating the success of inspirational female role models is vital given that the UK currently has the lowest proportion of female engineering professionals in Europe at just 6%. If the lack of women in engineering continues, the UK will be in a significantly weakened position to find the 1.82 million people with engineering skills that employers are projected to need from 2012 to 2022 (according to Engineering UK). So, the Institution of Engineering and

Technology (IET) is calling on successful young female engineers to enter its 2015 Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards. The Awards are all about raising the profile of today’s most impressive female engineers, celebrating their successes and encouraging them to become role models to inspire the next generation of female engineers and help address the gender imbalance in engineering and science. IET President-elect, Naomi Climer, said: “Engineering is a hugely exciting and diverse

I

n recent weeks I’ve

had the opportunity to visit a number of companies at their production sites, and it has become clear that investment – whether in staff, facilities or future developments – is high on the list of priorities. One example of this can be seen at Blue Diamond in Hampshire, which has recently acquired a building equal in size to its current facility. With the stores and warehousing being re-located to this new building, the current site will become a centre of excellence. Dassault Systèmes is another

company looking to the future. During a meeting, EuroNorth MD, Stephen Chadwick, discussed the company’s 3DExperience platform, new and upcoming innovations, and then explained how it will become a ‘3D experience company’ by 2021. This will be based on a business experience platform that will enable clients to not only design products suitable for the customer but to share ideas and make decisions on these ideas within their organisations. He then went on to explain how virtual reality is becoming more important by providing the ability to test products on customers before the product has actually been built. It will be interesting to see
