EXHIBITION PREVIEW FEATURE A focal point for manufacturing
This June, three co-located shows will be taking place at the NEC: Subcon; The Advanced Manufacturing Show; and The Engineer Design & Innovation Show. These will provide a focal point for engineering-based manufacturing in the UK across all sectors and disciplines
A
mong the three shows taking place on 2nd to 4th June at Birmingham’s
NEC are Subcon, which will feature over 300 subcontractors showcasing their capabilities. Special features will include an Advisory Drop-In Centre where visitors will be able to get help with issues such as exporting and access to finance; while an Innovation Hub will showcase innovation in action and give visitors the chance to talk to companies that have successfully built their business by innovating. Visitors can also take part in the free-to-attend Engineer Conference. Showcase sessions will feature the project to recreate an iconic Bugatti plant and the Rosetta space mission. Among those exhibiting at Subcon
this year is Mini Gears, which will be highlighting the recently added large turning and milling capacity – recently installed was a Leadwell LTC 35C Turning Centre with huge torque and turning diameter up to 420mm. Despite often being associated with small components and gears, the company has moved into aircraft seating components, the nuclear industry and specialist parts. Rotor Clip will be showing its range
of flat wave springs. According to the company, well-designed wave springs can produce the same or even greater force as coil springs, and a more consistent force over a wide range of deflections. Visitors will also
be able to see Phoenix Dynamics, which designs and manufactures electrical cable assemblies. The company has recently been awarded a contract by the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO). The first phase will involve the manufacture of an estimated 10,000 cable assemblies over 24 months. TÜV UK will be offering help to visitors
on two new EU directives. Certification sales manager, Rob Buckley, said: “We will be on hand to speak to people about two EU Directives that continue to cause a degree of confusion: CE Marking of Fabricated Steelwork (EN 1090); and ESOS,
the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme. Both are mandatory and we’ve been working on and providing services to ensure compliance for both schemes, for a wide range of clients.” Another exhibitor, Allsops, has
invested over £2m in new machinery, with recent investments including a Bystronic fibre laser and the latest Salvagnini panel bending machine. Its services include design, punching, laser cutting, folding, welding, fabrication, powder coating and assembly. Electronics manufacturer, Cogent,
delivers PCB Assembly and complete box build. The company now offers three distinct services, underpinned by bespoke processes: the Fast Track service is for the development of prototypes with rapid turnaround; NPI (New Product Introduction); and Series Production. Darian, meanwhile, will be launching
its new sheet metal and plate fabrication service. The company supplies machined grey iron and steel castings, pressure die-castings, forgings, CNC machined items, pressings and stampings to the UK and German markets. What is claimed to be a world-first

manufacturing collaboration is heading for Subcon 2015. The Midlands Assembly Network (MAN), which features eight sub-contract manufacturers, a design agency and academic partner Warwick Manufacturing Group, offers customers a single point of contact to their engineering requirements. Working across 12 state-of- the-art factories, the collective is able to provide a total manufacturing solution – from initial prototyping, fabrication and precision machining to chemical etching, injection moulding and PCB development. Also exhibiting is Edmo, which can supply anything from simple bar length aluminium extrusion through to a fully fabricated, finished and assembled boxed product. The company has extensive aluminium fabrication and CNC capability with a custom built assembly plant to avoid contamination. Established as a tool manufacturer,
/ DESIGNSOLUTIONS
Patterson & Rothwell now offers a one-stop-shop for all needs – including design, FDM model making, tool manufacture, moulding and packaging. It also works with customers to refine their part design and improve product quality. Italian manufacturer Tecnica Gasket
will be exhibiting a selection of its gaskets and custom parts made of rubber, liquid silicone rubber and thermoplastic materials. FJ Industries, meanwhile, supplies
powder metallurgy, cast, forged and machined components. The company has passed the final TS16949 audit and is now certified according to the highest quality management standard within the automotive industry. Also attending is Timsons Engineering,
which offers a one-stop-shop for all subcontract engineering services, including both foundry and machining services; and can supply machined fabrications and machine free issue components. At Subcon the company is launching a new mechanical and electrical fitting service. Keighley Laboratories is coming to
Subcon with its new state-of-the-art nitriding capacity now fully on stream. This joins a sealed quench gaseous nitrocarburising unit. The new heat treatment department will offer gaseous nitriding and both ferritic and austenitic nitrocarburising. Find out more at the show. Following substantial investments,
SMT Developments, part of the MAN Group, has doubled its electronics assembly capability and added a new automated conformal coating and silicon bead dispensing line. Clients who have benefitted from SMT’s bespoke customer service can now enjoy a more comprehensive service from PCB assembly through to full product build.
ENGINEERING DESIGN & INNOVATION The new Engineer Design & Innovation Show focuses on everything a designer needs to do their job: from high-end products and services – such as new design software and 3D printing – to the components, materials and technologies. Exhibitors here will include Elesa,
which will be showcasing products including the newly announced PR-CH
