SPECIAL FOCUS THE RAIL INDUSTRY
BUILDING GIGABIT NETWORKS IN TRAINS
A Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) study has concluded that optical fibre is suitable for use on rolling stock. During the trial, connectivity components including fibre optic cables, connectors and databus cables from HUBER+SUHNER were tested. The company supplied two- and
four-core fibre optic cables and QODC connectors. With these, the train was equipped with a test network including 24 surveillance cameras, a passenger information system, and an intercom system. SSB not only assumed that bandwidth requirements would increase in the future, but also took into consideration the possible future installation of an infotainment system. During the trial, HUBER+SUHNER’s fibre optic inter-vehicle jumper cables showed no signs of damage, water leakage or moisture; and the connections showed no visible signs of ageing.

Whether it is on train or trackside, and used for control, communication, signalling or lighting - nothing moves without power. To help, PULS has introduced the DIN-RAILway power supply. Within the industry, product
compliance with EN50155 and EN50121 must be demonstrated through proper testing. This includes: vibration resistance (DIN EN61373); temperature range – for the railway sector an extended temperature range of up to 70˚C continuously and 85˚C for 10 minutes is required; EMC resistance (EN50121-3-2); and Fire protection (EN45545-1). In addition, however, the new power supplies have a simple
DIN-rail fixation. The vibration-proof mounting on a DIN-rail requires a high-quality fixing system and minimum unit weight. Also, the use of spring clamp wire terminals removes the possibility of screw terminals coming loose. The DIN-RAILway power supplies from PULS represent a new range of railway power supplies whose concept has already been proven in tens of thousands of industry applications worldwide. A complete range of one to three phase AC units and DC/ DC converters are currently available.

New from Esterline Connection Technologies - SOURIAU is the MSG 3U connector, designed for on-board or on- ground TCMS (Train Control Monitoring System) and TIMS (Train Information Management System) applications. The reliable and
compact connector complies with EN 45545 and has been developed for 3U racks. It is shielded inside a
metal hood on the plug and receptacle sides for full protection against electromagnetic interference and signal degradation. MSG3U is available in three layouts: with 29 and 41 standard contacts and with up to five Quadrax Ethernet contacts. The connector is already being used successfully on Japan’s railway networks, the company adds.

DC CHARGING PROTECTION
In Singapore, Monorail Mass-Transit is used around the city (the LRT system) and the nearby Changi airport (the Skytrain system). FDB’s EFU50 DC units have been used to protect in-station equipment on the DC contactless charging system where it monitors the DC circuit for earth faults and disconnects if a fault is detected. The RIA tested EFU50 will detect residual direct current without Hall Effect transducers, and can be installed to detect when and where an earth fault occurs in a DC wired circuit. It is designed to react to DC current only and will reject induced or stray alternating current from 25Hz to 250Hz up to two Amps whilst still operating precisely on DC residential current against its preset level. This enables it to be used to detect imposed DC current on AC circuits as well as its primary use of DC residual current detection. This is a fully encapsulated device
providing excellent temperature stability and high immunity against shock and vibration, the company claims. It is housed in a single, compact DIN rail (or chassis mounted) enclosure with a 28 or 46mm aperture for the load cables to pass through. It also has integral test and reset push buttons and LED indication of E/F trip.
CONNECTIONS FOR ON-BOARD ETHERNET
To meet increasingly demanding customer expectations and to exploit the capabilities of advanced technologies, an increasing number of electrical and electronic components and systems are being installed on trains. This, however, means new interconnectivity solutions are needed to link systems for passenger information, entertainment, safety, automatic passenger counting and onboard computer systems. To meet the requirement for high-speed signal and data transmission, trains are now using a central Ethernet ‘backbone’ which supports structured Ethernet networks and requires Ethernet switches to carry out the necessary routing. This backbone runs throughout the entire length of the trains, linking equipment such as CCTV cameras, Wi-Fi networks and passenger information systems. Inter-car connections in such systems are realised using robust jumper cables and customisable connectors.
Using HARTING Han HPR connectors with ground disconnect, these solutions provide full 10 Gigabit transmission tested to IEEE 802.3 utilising CAT 7 cables. Not only are these compliant with fire regulation EN 45545 – 1, 2 & 5 and EN 50155:2007, but they offer IP68 and IP69K sealing capability, and carry IRIS certification. Being modular, the connectors give users the ability to mix signal, data and power interfaces in a single connector, along with the flexibility to incorporate up to six 10 Gigabit links in the connector.
