Laser Cutting - Moulds the Future


Synrad CO2 lasers within the injection moulding cells. Each cell contains two Synrad CO2 lasers, one is used for cutting off the moulding sprues, the other is used to mark manufacture dates directly on the moulding. Once moulded, large sections of trim are transported by robot to the laser cutter where the robot accurately guides the trim to remove the sprues or profile an edge offering a clean, consistent and accurate finish. The robot then transports the moulding to the laser marker which marks the moulding with the date and time and, if required company logo and a unique identity, either by conventional barcode or 2D matrix.

With a PI Hexapod capability of load handling of up to 1000kg, provides precise multi-axis positioning in industrial applications where the available space envelope is limited.


With a linear repeatability of +/-2µm and a resolution of down to 0.04µm, positioning accuracy now goes to a new level. If the Hexapod is not mounted horizontally,


the robot can precisely position loads of up to 300kg.


The flexibility of the orientation aids implementation of the robot into a manufacturing environment and minimises its space requirements as the system can be mounted above, inverted or at an angle to a work-piece. Combined with an absolute encoder, allows position information to be known on power up, meaning that no referencing routine or hence motion of the robot, is needed before operation.


With a compact baseplate, the hexapod range can provide up to 190mm of travel in the x and y axes and 105mm in z. With angular travel ranges, of up to +/- 30 degrees in theta Z and +/- 20 degrees in theta X and Y.
