PRODUCTS FASTENINGS & ADHESIVES MIXING BATCHES BONDING SOLUTION BENEFITS NEW SHOCK

OF ADHESIVES A high specification UV cure adhesive, pre-mixed with microspheres to ensure bondline thickness, is used by optical instrument makers Gooch & Housego in a military application. There were, however, problems in getting a homogenous dispersion of microspheres in the mix, which could lead to poor fitment of the optical element and subsequent removal, cleaning and re-working. To overcome this issue, Intertronics

demonstrated its bench-top Thinky ARE250 mixer. Using Thinky, the company was able to mix smaller batches of adhesive using a very simple pre-programmed cycle. The customer can now mix as much

ABSORBING WHEEL Nominated for the prestigious ‘Designs of the Year 2015’, Loopwheels is a shock-absorbing wheel with an integral suspension system. Having been successful in the cycling market, the company has now adapted the product to make it suitable for the production of wheelchairs. Designed to move more easily over uneven surfaces, grass and gravel paths, the carbon springs in Loopwheels give the extra power needed to get up or down kerbs, the company explains. They are also strong, durable and more comfortable than standard wheels as they absorb tiring vibration, as well as bumps and shocks. Araldite composite bonder was selected by the manufacturer of the product. This not only offered easy and fast application during production, but ensured a resilient bond, toughness, low shrinkage and exceptional resistance to impact and shear, the company claims. The specific Araldite epoxy adhesives chosen by Loopwheels are said to not only offer general-purpose, superior structural stability and flexibility, but also thermal stability and fatigue resistance. Sam Pearce, Loopwheels’ director and designer, commented: “Working with Huntsman, we were quickly

able to identify the correct adhesive which provides an incredibly strong bond and has enabled us to reduce the number of mechanical fixings and, therefore, the weight of our wheels.”

Henkel has introduced a range of Loctite dispensing systems based on the principle of volume change, a process which ensures consistent dosing. The Volumetric Dispensing Systems are often used in

material as they want, when they want it, with improved quality outcomes and significantly reduced re-work costs. The mixer has also been programmed to mix a two part sealant for a polariser prism assembly fitted inside an aluminium housing. Both parts of the sealant are the same colour, making it difficult to see if the mix was complete, resulting in occasional uneven or uncured parts. The two part sealant is quite

reactive when mixed, so the process is completed in a cooling adaptor in the Thinky, helping to preclude premature cure from heat build-up.

Investment in its UK facility has enabled GESIPA to centralise its production of threaded inserts and carry out a gradual transition from catalogue parts to specialised products. Currently, around 430 special types of rivet nuts and 30 different varieties of nut studs are manufactured at the facility. To meet requirements, the company can manufacture products with variations such as a hexagonal body to give higher torque to turn; square body to form a secure lock; profile body giving a pivot point; wedge head to provide higher torque to turn in softer materials; and large flange, providing larger load bearing surfaces. A recent success was a bespoke rivet nut for a customer. To stop the mating part from turning

when set in a body-in white component, a blind rivet nut with splined wedges on top of the rivet nut head, was designed and manufactured. To prevent these splined wedges getting damaged when setting into the application, a special nosepiece was also designed to be used with the rivet nut setting tool.

automatic workstations, transfer lines and in robotised assembly for precise dispensing of adhesive dots and beads onto mating surfaces or flanges. As Henkel can supply both the adhesive and the dispensing system, the combined solution results in high quality bonding and sealing, with very high repetition accuracy even in variable environment conditions. The standard, single pump, Volumetric Rotor Dispenser is

designed for flowable, single component Loctite anaerobic adhesives/sealants and light-curing acrylics. Its design makes it easy for users to select either the amount of product dispensed, in millilitres, or the dispense rate in ml/min. The Loctite Dual Rotor Pump Dispenser,

meanwhile, is mainly designed to handle two-part epoxy resins. It is suitable for processing low and high viscosity materials within the ratio of 1:1 to 10:1.

RTV BLACK ADHESIVE FOR ELECTRONICS

Now available from Dow Corning is EA-4600 Hot Melt Room- Temperature Vulcanization (RTV) Black Adhesive. Designed for improved assembly of consumer electronics and other high-volume manufacturing operations, the adhesive is formulated to dispense easily and achieve instant green strength. This allows electronic assemblies to be handled immediately after its application. EA-4600 Hot Melt Adhesive is a

reactive material that can be applied neatly as a liquid melt in very thin, <0.5mm wide, bonding lines. It cools quickly and cures at room temperature to become a viscoelastic polymer that provides strong, flexible, primerless adhesion to common plastic and metal substrates. In addition, the material offers extended service temperatures from -40˚C to 150˚C. It will soften when exposed to high temperatures, but revert to its typical properties after cooling. It also incorporates ultraviolet (UV) markers to support automated UV inspection of finished parts; and can be easily reworked within 24 hours of application. Once fully cured it is said to deliver outstanding, durable protection against chemicals, water and dust.
