Creating the theme Architectural details, props and paint can change the look of almost any existing structure to incorporate it into the new theme. The paint hues, shades and colour mixes are important to carry through a theme or establish a mood. By understanding the psychology of colour and how it affects people, you can effectively add to your guests’ experience or even encourage them to buy or eat more. Each historical era, time or place has a colour palette to go with. The use of bright, primary colours may attract attention, but the overuse of mismatching hues and glaring colours, unless it is part of the theme, can make the attraction uncomfortable and cheap looking. New, custom signage can dramatically change the look of a facility. The styles, colours, letter fonts, framing and details can all reinforce the new theme, or if incorrectly used, confuse the desired look. Signs with bright oranges, purples, turquoise and pinks can be great in a Caribbean theme while completely out of place in an Old West setting. Spending a little more money to design and purchase major signs with dimensional cut out letters and multi-layers will pay off in the long run to the overall look of the facility. Music and sound effects greatly add to creating a


theme or setting a mood. Background music matching the theme of an attraction will greatly enhance the guest experience, even with sparse sets or theming.


The use of special effect audio background tracks such as seagulls, forest or jungle birds or a storm with thunder and blowing wind are the special touches which make an area or attraction unique. Sometimes a small detail, such as the sound of crickets and frogs coming from under a bridge, will be remembered by guests more than a larger theme element.


If properly planned and designed, a re-theme or refurbishment of a park or attraction can give new life to a facility and create dramatic results in the enhancement of your guest’s experience.
