New Year celebrations last month, when thousands enjoyed the daily park parades and a brisk trade was done in Hello Kitty toys, merchandise and even Hello Kitty-shaped cakes. Hello Kitty fans can avail themselves of plenty of photo opportunities throughout the park including such locations as the Hello Kitty House, courtyard, garden and alongside a replica of Big Ben, not to mention the parades. Yet according to local press reports, many of the rides have yet to open. Japanese licence holder Saniro is believed to
have invested RMB 1.5 billion ($240m/€210m) in the venture together with partner Shanghai Silver Run Holdings and hopes to attract up to one million visitors in the first year (based on a 12-month operating calendar). Many of those guests are expected to be tourists, attracted not just by the power of the Hello Kitty brand, but also the park’s beautiful surroundings. “We did not want to establish a park in the busy heart of the city,” explains Hello Kitty Park spokesperson Jiang Lina. “Anji’s beauty provides us with a green canvas so that when families return home, they have not only have they enjoyed an exquisite fantasy surprise, but also had close contact with nature.”

Other Hello Kitty theme park attractions around the world include themed lands at Saniro’s own Puroland in Tokyo and Harmonyland parks in Hiji, plus individual Hello Kitty attractions at several other Japanese parks; Hello Kitty Town at Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park in Johor Bahru, Malaysia; and Hello Kitty Secret Garden at Drusillas Park in Sussex, England. But the new Hello Kitty Park in Anji is the world’s largest park dedicated to the kitsch cartoon cat.
