Smartphone sales hit a new high G
lobal smartphone sales set a new milestone in Q4 2014, reaching $115 billion for the quarter, an increase of 20 percent year-on-year, according to data from
GfK. Te number of units sold globally increased to almost 346 million, up 19% on Q4 2013. Western European sales were up 14% in Q4 to 40 million units, generating $17.2 billion revenues.

Birmingham City University this month. Former Google director Frank Golding is due to speak at the Rethink Media event on Wednesday 18 March. ‘Video will be displayed on literally everything soon’, Golding predicts. ‘TV sets of the future will be screenless frames through which holograms appear. We already have audio induction, but I’m envisioning power induction next. IoT expected to have impact but direction is lacking

ore than 40% of organisations expect the Internet of Tings (IoT) to transform their business or offer
significant new revenue or cost-savings opportunities over the next three years, rising to 60% over five years, according to a recent survey by Gartner. However, those surveyed said there is no established clear business or technical leadership on IoT. Tey poled the views of 463 IT and business leaders.
UK CIOs in a positive mood as tech investment goes beyond the IT budget

generally positive outlook from CIOs in the UK and Ireland is translating into growth in average IT spending, according to a report by Gartner. It says CIOs are expecting to increase IT budgets by 1.4% in 2015 and
in addition to this increase, there is an increasing amount of investment in IT occurring across the enterprise, with more than 21% of IT investment taking place outside of the official IT budget. As CIOs emerge from a long period of cost-cutting and restricted IT budgets, there is a renewed focus on strategic investments in information and technology that will enable business growth.
SaaS set to take more share of the cloud
lobal SaaS software revenues are forecast to reach $106 billion in 2016, increasing 21% over projected 2015. A Goldman Sachs study published this month projects that spending on cloud computing infrastructure and platforms
will grow at a 30% CAGR from 2013 through 2018 compared with 5% growth for the overall enterprise IT.
By 2018, according to the Cisco Global Cloud Index, 59% of the total cloud workloads will be SaaS, up from 41% in 2013. IaaS workloads meanwhile will be down from 44% in 2013 to 28% in 2018. PaaS will move from 15% in 2013 to 13% in 2018.
