POSTGRAD SPOTLIGHT MUAMBA LIFESAVER TAKES ON NEW CHALLENGE

You may recognise Dr Shabaaz Mughal as one of the doctors that helped to save Bolton Wanderers player Fabrice Muamba’s life when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch, during an FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur in March 2012. Shabaaz, is currently studying the MSc in Medical Ultrasound at the AECC. We caught up with him to see how it’s going...

Tell us a bit about your background and how you came to be in football.

I am currently the full time club doctor at Tottenham Hotspur FC, this is now my fifth season in the role. I am a Consultant Physician in Sport and Exercise Medicine. I originally qualified as a GP before changing speciality and have worked my way up through the levels of football starting at Leyton Orient FC and the England Youth set up.

What made you decide to undertake the MSc in Medical Ultrasound?

I decided to undertake the MSc in Medical Ultrasound to enhance and formally appraise my skills in musculoskeletal ultrasound. I hope it will improve on my existing knowledge base and skillset and allow me to continue to utilise ultrasound as a key component of my daily practice, which I feel is essential for a sports physician.

What made you choose the AECC?

I decided to choose the AECC due to the excellent word of mouth recommendations and reputation that the course has amongst my

peers. I have thoroughly enjoyed the course so far, it is demanding but it has been refreshing to travel outside London and be able to spend some time in a new place. The faculty are excellent, very knowledgeable and very helpful with a good variety of expertise and opinion.
