ENRICHING THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
As part of the Student Insight Club this year we have been pleased to welcome several high profile speakers through our doors. The speakers come from a range of backgrounds and with varying views, philosophies and opinions to talk within a semi- controlled environment and setting. The speakers encourage wider thinking and represent a fantastic opportunity for our students to take in and respond to these different viewpoints.
One such speaker that has invited a large amount of debate was Edzard Ernst. Professor Ernst offered himself up to speak at any educational institution that would welcome him in, so we, not being shy of a bit of healthy debate invited him along. Professor Ernst came and spoke about his views on the chiropractic profession as well as taking time to answer questions from the audience. Ernst has previously worked as Chair in Complementary Medicine at the University of Exeter and has published extensively including ‘Trick or Treatment?
Alternative Medicine on Trial’ and ‘The Oxford Handbook of Complementary Medicine’.
The lecture, which was offered to all AECC students facilitated much discussion, something we feel is important in terms of enriching the academic experience. At the AECC we provide an evidence based, science led curriculum and as such we welcome the opportunity to engage with academics and clinicians with a range of views and approaches to health care.
AARON COODE AT SOUTHAMPTON FC
AECC Clinical Tutor Dr Aaron Coode has recently started working with Southampton Football Club one day a week. Aaron is the Academy Team chiropractor and will be treating the players, as well as working on injury prevention and rehabilitation. Southampton has a multi-disciplinary team made up of a physiotherapist, chiropractor, sports nutritionist and team doctor who all work together to keep the players on top form.
Aaron has specialised in sports injuries for many years and has a keen interest in rehabilitation of athletes. He commented: “Treating sports injuries is my special interest and getting out and working with a football team is not only something that I enjoy but something that will equip me with new skills that I can in turn take back to the college environment and use to teach the students .”
Treating athletes is a big part of many chiropractors’ careers and as such the AECC is investing more into sports rehabilitation and is soon to open a Specialist Exercise Rehabilitation and Assessment Centre. The centre, which will house a range of high-tech equipment, will enable Sports and Rehab faculty to undertake functional assessments and devise corrective rehabilitation programmes on an individual basis.
