ALUMNI NEWS ADVANCES IN RESEARCH ON PELVIC GIRDLE PAIN
Francesca Wuytack first realised that she wanted to become a chiropractor when she was 16 and suffered from a bout of acute low back pain. As a keen dancer it was a blow for her, particularly as she had never suffered with this kind of pain before. After seeing a chiropractor, Francesca experienced a full recovery. A few months later Francesca visited the AECC, and it was not long thereafter that she knew what she wanted to do career wise. She applied straight away and started at the college the following year.
Francesca was an outstanding student during her time at the college. In 2011 in her final year, she won runner-up for the British Council SHINE award, a competition which celebrates the achievements of international students and their contributions to life in the UK. 24 runner ups were selected from 1,200 entries from 118 nationalities. She also received the award for outstanding academic performance for both her pre-clinic and clinic year.
After graduating from the AECC, Francesca practised for a year in the UK. As she had a keen interest in research, she decided to undertake a PhD and successfully obtained a PhD Scholarship from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) where she has been conducting research on Pelvic Girdle Pain as part of Maternal Health And Maternal Morbidities in Ireland (MAMMI) study since 2012.
In addition to her PhD, Francesca was a Research Fellow to the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) project, an EU-FP7 funded European research- based initiative. Although originally advertised as a post- doctoral position, Francesca was exceptionally offered this post to conduct alongside her PhD for a six month period. As if this wasn’t enough she was also awarded a Cochrane Fellowship from the Health Research Board of Ireland last year, which will provide her with training to gain expertise in conducting systematic reviews to a high standard.
Francesca commented: “I really enjoyed my time at AECC. It equipped me with a strong foundation for clinical practice as well as a good basis to conduct research. The atmosphere was one of stimulating interest in students, the faculty were very approachable, and there was just a great atmosphere in the college amongst students and staff. In future, I hope to continue conducting research combined with clinical practice.”
