ALUMNI NEWS DOUBLE PODIUM AT F1 FINAL

AECC graduate and Williams Mercedes team chiropractor Matt Scroggs recently had an eventful weekend at the F1 final in Abu Dhabi with both of his team mates scoring a podium finish. Matt has been working with Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa throughout the season helping to ensure that the drivers remain at the top of their game and injury free, work that has clearly paid off with the team coming third in the championship.

Well done Matt! Above: Matt Scroggs with Lewis Hamilton NEW SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE WORLD FEDERATION OF CHIROPRACTIC (WFC)

We caught up with AECC alumnus Richard Brown, newly appointed Secretary General of the WFC (formally Secretary General of the European Chriopractors Union (ECU)) to ask him about his 2014 highlights as well as the exciting ventures he has in store for 2015.

2014 was a busy year for you, what were your highlights?

Every year has many highlights, but 2014 was special for a number of reasons. In January, I was asked to speak on behalf of the ECU in the Philippines at the Asia Pacific Regional Federation annual meeting. It was a flying visit but gave me a great opportunity to steal a glimpse of an entirely different culture and learn more about chiropractic in this highly populated region of the world. The ECU Convention in Dublin in May was great success with typical Irish hospitality. Also attending two graduation ceremonies in two days (AECC in Bournemouth and IFEC in Paris) was a great way to complete the year.

Above: Richard Brown What does 2015 have in store for you?

I’m very honoured to have been appointed as the next Secretary General of the World Federation of Chiropractic. This was never something I envisaged when I graduated from AECC back in 1990. It means I will be moving across to Toronto to start my new role in July but will be returning to the UK on a regular basis. I’m very excited about the prospect of going to Africa in January to take part in the World Spine Care initiative. Those who have been tell me it’s a life- changing experience.

Will you be attending the AECC 50 celebrations in September 2015?

Just try and stop me! AECC’s 50th birthday coincides with my 25th anniversary of graduating, so I’m hoping to meet with many friends from the class of 1990.

You attended the AECC’s 2014 graduation ceremony, do you have a message for our new graduates? AECC has given you skills and knowledge that will enable you to bring relief to the suffering, comfort to the distressed and support to those in need. Stay true to yourselves, maintain your integrity and enjoy your profession.

Do you have any highlights from your time at the college?

I was privileged to have been taught by those who continue to serve the profession to this day: Ken Vall, Ray Broome, David Byfield, Pete McCarthy Alan Breen and Alan Tyler were all on the AECC faculty when I was there. I vividly remember taking part in the 1991 AECC Rugby fixture which, although billed as a friendly, saw two students taken to hospital. The College Christmas reviews were as near the knuckle as they could be. Reciting the register at every lecture and witnessing Partej Moondi’s anatomical drawings whilst he repeated his catchphrase “It’s all in the book” stick in my mind. The ultimate highlight, of course, was learning I’d passed my clinic exit exams. In those days, graduation was two days later and I started work two days after that!

I would add that I have nothing but admiration for the Board, the Executive, the Faculty and the current students at AECC. They make the institution what it is and continues to be; a very special place to study chiropractic and one that I am proud to call my alma mater.
