Still in the midst of its winter season at the time of writing, Europa-Park passed the 5 million visitor mark for the first time in its 39-year history on 16 December.


“Shortly before the 40th birthday of Europa-Park, we have recorded the best year and strongest level of growth in the history of our business,” notes owner Roland Mack. “The increase in the number of French visitors alone is significant in comparison to the previous year. We attribute this to the massive success of Arthur – In the Minimoys Kingdom”. By this summer of 2014, the park in Rust near Freiburg had recorded a total of 100 million visits since opening in 1975, and as a repeat visit rate of 80%. It is now the second most visited tourist destination in Germany after Cologne Cathedral, and the second busiest theme park in Europe after Disneyland Paris.


Leolandia Italy A fantastic 25% growth in attendance


was recorded in 2014 at this emerging park near Milan, which moved from sixth to third best park in Italy for guest satisfaction according to Tripadvisor. This result has been reached thanks some important strategic decisions, according to Leolandia management. The first was an emphasis on going green, including the use of renewable energy and the introduction of slow


food, second was making use of technology in order to enhance the pre-visit guest experience, including the implementation of dynamic pricing, and finally the introduction of new lands including Cowboy Town and Mr Bull’s Worksite. The latter offered a meet and greet area with Peppa Pig, serving a precursor to Peppa's House which will open in 2015. Peppa Pig is the best loved pre-school kids' TV character in Italy, and the deal with licence holder eOne, which will eventually lead to the development of a full Peppa Pig World, is expected to play a major part in Leolandia's attempts to hit the one million attendance mark over the next few years. Guiding the improvements will be Massimiliano Freddi, managing director of the park since 2010, who will adopt the new position of vice-president of strategic development. Day-to-day operation will be overseen by Giuseppe Ira, president Thorus Leolandia, which bought the park in 2007 when it was on the brink of bankruptcy. How things change!

It was a record year for Austria's largest amusement park, which finished its seven-month-long season on 2 November with almost half a million (496,000) guests – up 19.2% on 2013. The number of annual passes rose to 18,500, and group bookings were up too. The park near Lake Neusiedlersee in Burgenland also enjoyed a successful Halloween event (as picturd), welcoming 13,000 visitors over three days. The 2015 season starts on 28 March, when new attractions will include a heavily- themed Gerstlauer Sky Fly.


Holiday Park Germany Attendance was up around 17% at Holiday Park, which finished the season in November with 645,000 visitors – its best ever performance under the ownership of the Plopsa group, which has been at the helm of the German property since 2010. Two periods in particular showed strong performance, the Easter holidays and a prolonged Pentecost weekend. The new Premier Rides rollercoaster Sky Scream, a redesigned Wickie the Viking area and flume ride (pictured), and several new family events are credited with driving large numbers of extra visitors to the 40-acre park in Rhineland-Palatinate. "Holiday Park has received a completely new, fabulous face and a convincing overall concept in the last four years,” believes manager Bernd Beitz. “Until now Plopsa has already invested 21 million euros in the park: All new features are distinguished by a fanciful, lovingly detailed design.”
