2014 National Junior Olympic Championships

Close as it can get - NJOSC Shows Off Talent, Depth Within Junior Ranks

Record numbers, tight

competition and weather were the storylines helping comprise the 2014 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) for Shotgun in Colorado Springs, July 9-13. Ten World Champion-

ship team members made the visit to the International Shooting Park to compete along with the largest fi eld in recent memory. Colorado’s Front Range greeted them with a severe dose of after- noon thunderstorms that left the fi eld wet and wind- blown.

Six of the 10 World Team

members would fi nd medal success at this year’s NJOSC led by repeat skeet Nation- al Champions Dania Vizzi (Odessa, Florida) and Phillip Jungman (Caldwell, Texas). Vizzi was joined on the po- dium with her fellow Junior World Team members Han- nah Houston (Columbia, Tennessee) and Sydney Car- son (North Liberty, Indiana). For Jungman, it’s his third NJOSC title in four years. Other World Team mem-

bers earning podium spots included Women’s Trap champion Ashley Carroll

(Solvang, California) along with Women’s Trap bronze medalist Amber Culwell (Rose Bud, Arkansas). Logan Mountain (Palm-

dale, California) was also most impressive during a week-long performance that included being crowned National Champion in Trap while also fi nishing as a run- ner-up in Men’s Double Trap. Neither wind nor rain

could temper what turned out to be a hotly-contested match in Men’s Double Trap. In the end, Jesse Haynes- Lewis (Nahant, Massachu- setts) would best Mountain

for the title. Five new athletes earned

National Junior Team dis- tinction including Mountain, Haynes-Lewis,

Zachary

McBee (Gilbert, Arizona), Tyler Lirio (Coolidge, Geor- gia) and Grace Hambuchen (Maumelle, Arkansas). Five new members were

added to the Junior Olympic Squad as well including Will Thomas (West Des Moines, Iowa), Kendall Reed (Azle, Texas), Nathaniel Lundie (Wellesley, Massachusetts), Sevin Layer (Palm Harbor, Florida) and Emma Williams (Savannah, Tennessee).
