Good luck, Kathryn Story: Kathryn Ward to leave Tui Travel

Good luck, Kathryn (pictured) – 28 years with the same company is a very long time. Always good to have a change. Hopefully Tui/ Thomson will become more independent travel agent-friendly (like Thomas Cook) and enable us to promote and sell their holidays competitively. l Norma Fenwick

APD rocks Blackpool Story: Future of Blackpool airport hangs in the balance In 2007 Blackpool carried over half a million passengers, so there is potential. What is killing regional airports is APD, which has more than doubled since then. We’ve seen the loss of Plymouth and Manston too. If people have to travel farther to the airport then total emissions from flying are likely to rise, as does the cost. l Terry Piper

Kenya still magical I’ve just returned from Kenya where it was devastating to note the impact recent problems have had on tourism. At no time did my family or I feel threatened or unsafe; we received a friendly welcome everywhere. Special thanks must go to all the staff

at Encounter Camp in Naboisho and Entim Camp in the Masai Mara who ensured our birthday and anniversary celebrations will be remembered for a long time. I shall advise my clients to heed, but not over-react to, travel directives and go ahead and enjoy a ‘Magical Kenya’ holiday. l Sandra Tuck, manager, Chandelle Travel, Old Basing, Hampshire

Raw recruits

Story: Travel has lost ‘sex appeal’ for new recruits There are still a lot of people wanting to work in the travel sector; however, it has lost a lot of its sex appeal compared with when I began in the late 1960s. There are still fam trips and functions, but fewer agents’ discounts. And salaries are key if we want to recruit quality staff. l Tony

We must expand Story: Vince Cable backs Gatwick expansion Let’s hope that whatever the final recommendations, the next government is brave enough to make a decision and expand aviation capacity in the southeast, before the whole UK aviation infrastructure collapses. l Andy Cooper

Fly from the north

LETTER OF THE WEEK

I expect many other northern agents, like myself, turned past your special report about London Airways, sorry, I mean British Airways, and its Caribbean routes out of Gatwick and Heathrow (Travel Weekly, September 25). Despite operating multiple services – for example, Barbados 10-12 a week, Antigua and Saint Lucia daily, Trinidad five times a week – London Airways does not consider operating some of these services from Manchester. Yet it is clear from data available that many passengers travel from north of Watford to fly on these services – so why not try some of them out of Manchester? To compound the situation, London Airways also cancelled the Manchester-Gatwick link, so making it even harder to get passengers to the Caribbean from up north. There are plenty of wealthy clients up north who have been totally switched off the Caribbean now. So come on, Caribbean tourist boards and tour operators – if you want their bookings, you need to put pressure on both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic to operate services from Manchester. l Richard Slater, Personal Travel Agents
