With PLM, manufacturers can get a better idea of a product design’s complexities and whether new designs are manufacturable, as well as the ability for digital prototypes to cut manufacturing costs. Simulat- ing manufacturing throughput is key, said Daniel Raubinger, Automation Alley’s director, Defense and Manufacturing.


CAE and Multiphysics Simulation


Another aspect of simulation that greatly helps product designers is what CIMdata called the “de- mocratization” of CAE and multiphysics simulation tools. This class of software, which includes fi nite element analysis (FEA) and computational fl uid dy- namics (CFD), increasingly is becoming much more widely available to non-expert users in manufactur- ing. These CAE tools have enabled manufacturers to drastically reduce the number of prototypes created during development cycles, reducing costs and time to market. Keith Meintjes, practice manager, Simulation and Analysis, CIMdata Inc. (Ann Arbor, MI), said com- panies like General Motors have eliminated most prototypes for iterative development testing. “The de- velopment iterations are the evil prototypes you want to rid of,” Meintjes said. “They’re the ones that are expensive, and there are all kinds of issues because they’re hand-built.”

In addition to offering its cloud-based PLM 360


solution, Autodesk also offers its full suite of CAE applications through its cloud-based Simulation 360 suite with Autodesk’s Simulation Mechanical and Simulation CFD (computational fl uid dynam- ics) software for fl uid dynamics and thermal simula- tions.
