are loaded and unloaded from the top, a permanent or semi- permanent cover was impractical. Instead Onsrud incorporated a retractable roof cover that encloses the top of the machine area and moves with the machine’s gantry during operation but is easily retracted for access when loading and unloading.
The Gortite machine roof cover was made by A&A Mfg. Co. Inc. (New Berlin, WI), a specialist in the design and manufacture of protective covers for a wide range of applications throughout industry. The translucent bellows material allows light into the enclosure and uses polyure- thane TPE with high-tenacity and monofi lament polyester. It incorporates a lightweight aluminum and low-friction plastic structure with minimal defl ection and low-friction rollers to minimize energy consumption. The cover is capable of 1g acceleration and 60 m/ min velocity with an extended length to retracted length ratio of 10:1 or better. Two 24' (7.3-m) wide covers each extend up to 28' (8.5 m) to enclose the top of the ma- chine, and retract to 2.5' (0.8 m). The bellows sections ride above the rail to provide maximum space inside the enclo- sure. When retracted, the cover height is 13" (330 mm). ME For more information from A&A Manufacturing Co.
