Machine Roof Cover Contains Dust and Sound

arge CNC machining centers require special effort to mini- mize the impact of dust and sound on surrounding work areas while still allowing access for loading and unloading large workpieces and tooling. A case in point is a C.R. Onsrud fi ve-axis machining center at GIW Industries Inc. (Grovewood, GA) that incorporates a retractable roof cover over its enclo- sure to answer both needs.
GIW Industries, a KSB Co., is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and application of heavy-duty centrifu- gal slurry pumps. To produce large patterns, mainly made of wood, for casting its pump components, the company recently acquired a fi ve-axis hybrid router/mill built by C.R. Onsrud Inc. (Troutman, NC). The machine’s overall footprint mea- sures approximately 31 × 34' (9.4 × 10.4 m) and its high-rail design provides ample vertical space for large workpieces.

The machine was designed to offer a large work envelope at a reasonable cost with the accuracy appropriate for machining wood, aluminum, and composites, said Jeff Onsrud, engineer. “We wanted to contain debris and airborne contamination, but with a larger machine, a dust hood wasn’t practical. Sometimes a hood gets in the way of the part, so a bellows that could move with the machine seemed like the best solution.” The cover had to prevent dust and particles generated in the machining operation from dispersing out of the open top of the machine’s enclosure into the plant.
