A Renewable Energy Association Publication

Welcome to the debut edition of our new magazine REQ – Renewable Energy Quarterly. This is the sister publication to our major state-of-the- industry report REView which we launched in April with a host of business and political leaders. One of these leaders

was Energy Minister Greg Barker, who departed  Greg was the only DECC minister to have held his post since the 2010 election. This stability was most welcome during what has often been a fraught policy environment. More than stability, Greg brought genuine passion, enthusiasm and understanding of the extraordinary potential of renewable energy to transform our economy, our energy security and our environment. We wish Greg all the best as he moves on to new challenges and we will certainly keep in touch. We also look forward to working with new ministers in the energy and environment sectors,

especially Amber Rudd and Matt Hancock in DECC, to build on the progress made to date on renewables ahead of next April’s General Election. With party conferences just around the corner,

we are about to launch our own manifesto. We have two central messages for politicians in the run-up to the election.  is united. Various policy decisions are increasingly pitting renewable energy technologies against one another (especially in large scale power – read more on p. 7 and in the next issue of REQ) but all our technologies – bar none – are vital for phasing out imported, polluting and increasingly expensive fossil fuels. This is our real competition, and we will

soon reveal the key asks of not just the REA, but a much wider coalition. The second key message is that the policy

framework for renewable heating and transport needs a real shot in the arm to help them catch up with the healthy progress we’ve seen in renewable electricity this parliament. All three sectors still have a long way to go to meet their 2020 targets, but heating and transport are all too often forgotten about in the energy debate. This is one reason why this edition of REQ has a major focus on heat. To put it simply, we’re working to get politicians and the public alike to wake up to green heat. The Renewable Heat Incentive is one of this Government’s best kept secrets. Over 5,000   like wood heat, solar heating and heat pumps, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Renewable heating needs to increase four-fold by 2020, up to 12% of all heating, to meet our 2020 targets. One of the key asks for renewable heat in our

manifesto is for long-term certainty in the RHI, a call recently echoed by the Committee on Climate Change. Industry needs visibility on continued funding of the scheme to 2020, and the continued existence of the scheme beyond 2020, to make the required investments in developing skills and supply chains. With clear, stable policies, renewable heat can have a very bright future indeed. REQ we welcome the

Our team is stronger than ever and well- equipped to face the policy and political challenges ahead. Together, the renewable energy industry is ready to take its rightful place at the heart of the UK energy mix. As long as we stick together, work together and bring the public and politicians with us, we can make this vision a reality.
