REHEAT – INSIGHTS FROM INDUSTRY REQ

USING HEAT FROM AD

A

grikomp provides on-farm anaerobic digestion as a way of managing a variety of farm materials including manure,

slurry and crop inputs. In the UK agriKomp has provided AD plants that are fed on manure from outdoor cattle pens, others with grass silage, or plants that use a mix of feedstocks, including fodder beet, potatoes, chicken litter, dairy slurry, grass, rye and maize. The digesters create biogas which is used to generate electricity and heat, and this heat has a number of on and off-site applications. Generation revenue, combined with FIT and RHI, means that agriKomp can help UK farms  anaerobic digestion facilities.

The RHI is providing renewed vigour to the

on-farm AD market and provides a number of real opportunities for better quality digestate outputs as well as drying, heating and chilling options, says agriKomp’s Avril Banks

provided by agriKomp, less than 20% of the heat generated within the CHP is used for heating the digesters. This leaves a large amount of heat which traditionally has rarely been utilised for on-farm systems due to  The Government’s recent agreement to

allow RHI to be claimed on non-domestic systems for AD over 200kW provides a real opportunity to maximise the environmental  enhancement of the digestate as well as a host of other possibilities. Designed by farmers for farmers, agriKomp

has provided over 600 plants throughout Europe since 2000, including in the UK 4 operational plants and a further 11 in commissioning and construction. In response to the opportunities now

available through the provision of the RHI, agriKomp is working with a number of its customers to replicate and enhance the way in which heat is used in its facilities across Europe. This includes district heating for local communities and hospitals, heating of livestock sheds, chilling for storage and for digestate treatment through drying and pasteurisation. This biosecurity measure is important for the UK market for digestate where use of the heat in pasteurisation and sanitisation can add an additional safeguard to the temperature treatment within the digestion process to ensure that any weeds present in the feedstock are neutralised.

In addition to the better management and biosecurity of digestate, most pasteurisation processes have the added effect of helping with the breakdown of some of the more  increased gas yield.

Biomethane has also been incentivised

by the new RHI tariff and agriKomp is  supports larger feedstock levels and is close to existing gas pipeline connections. AgriKomp plants are well proven, robust and designed for longevity and safe operation in the farming environment.
