REHEAT – INSIGHTS FROM INDUSTRY REQ

BUSINESS HEATING

What is the Renewable Heat Incentive? The Renewable Heat Incentive, introduced  to businesses in return for switching from a fossil fuelled boiler to a renewable heating solution like a biomass boiler or heat pump. In April 2014 the RHI scheme was extended to include households.

Why is the RHI required? Although the running costs of renewable heat technologies are already lower than fossil fuel systems, many need support with the higher upfront cost of this carbon footprint-reducing energy. This is where the RHI comes in. As with all new markets there needs to be an incentive for people to invest their own time to explore and understand the  available.

Households now spend an average of £816 on their annual heating bill which has risen by 17% per year over the last decade. Research has found that switching from traditional fossil fuels to a renewable heating solution  For example, two ETA woodchip Hack biomass boilers were installed at Brynkinalt Hall and Business Centre in North Wales. They now supply space heating and hot water for the 33,000 sq ft Grade II listed building, including two cottages and a business centre.

Since the installation, the business saves over 175 tonnes of CO2 p.a. The

estate also enjoys fuel savings of £25,000 p.a. and with the RHI’s help a 35% return on investment. Switching to a renewable heating solution not only saves considerable money for both homeowners and  reduces CO2

emissions.

The Renewable Heat Incentive is the best kept secret

in the industry. Innasol’s  David Rae explains how it works

Why has no one heard of the RHI? It is the best kept secret due to the fact that the Government has not advertised the RHI in the same way as the Green Deal; its preference to date has been to focus on industry events rather than a wider campaign to the public. In our opinion the government needs to do more to make people and businesses aware of the RHI and its many 

UK’s dependence of fossil fuel imports from hostile nations – we imported 47% of our energy in 2013 which is set to increase for the foreseeable future.

How easy is the application process?

It is simpler than most people think. Ofgem is responsible for handling applications and administering the RHI and there is a wealth of useful information available on their website. www.ofgem.gov.uk/environmental- programmes

How is the RHI performing so far? The commercial RHI has been a huge success, with almost 5,000 applications approved by June 2014 and an additional 2,000 applications in progress with biomass  of the domestic RHI, 2,335 applications had already been approved and 3,724 applications made by June 2014.
