Wood pellet fuelled steam boiler

About Balcas

Balcas has enjoyed over 60 years of success in the timber industry and is the largest manufacturer of premium quality wood pellet fuel, brites. The company has two dedicated brites

manufacturing plants, which generate their own energy requirements on-site; the largest of which is based in Invergordon, Scotland and the other in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. The Invergordon plant opened in 2009

representing an investment of £24 million into the local economy. Both sites use sawdust and other wood

The CHP plants power these self- sustainable sites and the Invergordon plant provides a further 5MWe of green electricity to the national grid. Together the plants produce 155,000 tonnes of brites each year. Invergordon produces 100,000 tonnes, which is almost double the size of the next nearest plant in the UK, and the Enniskillen plant produces 55,000 tonnes.

up-front capital investment from the distillery. The boiler, like those installed at Tomatin

and Aberfeldy, will be used to produce steam necessary for the whisky production processes and will be up and running by Q1 2015. At this time the distillery can expect to reap around a 30% reduction in its energy costs, while lowering greenhouse

Our proposition offers a straight-forward approach to environmental challenges presented not just to distilleries but to other industrial manufacturing sectors that use process steam loads, including food processors, chemical manufacturers, animal feed producers and dairies based in non-gas areas throughout the UK.

The virgin wood used to make brites is locally sourced and because renewable energy is used to manufacture brites, is one of the lowest carbon wood pellets available on the market. brites are distributed directly from the manufacturing plants to hundreds of customers and brites distributors throughout GB and Ireland and from the company’s storage facilities in the Republic of Ireland and England.

At a glance

Quantity of brites supplied to the market each year is 75 million kwh of heat

This displaces 75 million litres of oil Reduces CO2

emissions by 225,000 tonnes

Each year brites customers achieve a staggering cost saving of £15 million
