a greater challenge when it comes to engaging and succeeding in the learning process. In Lennon Flowers’ article, “Unleashing Empathy: How Teachers Transform Classrooms With Emotional Learning,” she states: “Under stress, the brain triggers a surge in cortisol, a hormone that produces the “fi ght or fl ight” response and inhibits the ability to absorb new information and to connect emotionally with others. Stressed children are anxious, tuned-out, emotionally volatile, and have diminished energy, stamina, and memory... Students experiencing trauma at home come to school unprepared to learn and unable to forge trusting relationships, leaving them more isolated and subject to failure, which further increases stress levels.”
What if instead of spending the
day at school compensating for these challenges, students looked forward to learning from teachers who provide a safe, nurturing and loving place? In Tom’s case, once he realized that I saw him as “Tom” not just another name on the roster, he began to see me as his ally. At that moment, real and lasting learning began. Lennon’s article continues: “Empathy has long been seen as key to effective teaching. Addressing the host of unmet social and emotional needs that students carry into the classroom demands that teachers be able to look below the surface and understand what’s driving a particular set of behaviors.” As empathy, compassion and respect become incorporated into the fundamentals of education, we will see more than just a shift in academics. Our children will fl ourish in mind, body and spirit. They will carry on the legacy of love out into the world. They will become a new generation of adults who prize connectedness over isolation, empathy over indifference and love over fear. They will innovate, improve and heal our world. All because someone saw them— and loved them—for who they are.
