IN THE spotlight

Doug Rich EMEA VP of Tintri

QBiggest influence?

A I don’t want to embarrass him, but the person who introduced me to IT and got me into the industry is my biggest influence. He gave me a chance when I didn’t have any experience and I owe him my career for that! His mantra of giving people a chance is something I try to live by.

QMost valuable lesson learnt?

A Always give someone a chance - if you see passion and ambition then you’ve got something to work with.

QOne company to watch (other than your own)?

A Cloudera. Cloudera is the quintessential Silicon Valley story.

When top engineers from Google, Yahoo and Facebook team up with an ex-Oracle executive to tackle the analysis of big data, you know you’re going to get something special that will benefit a whole new class of businesses.

QA book, a movie or the TV?

A Movie. I’m a big fan of 1970s conspiracy films like The Conversation, Three days of the Condor and Marathon Man. I also love French and Spanish films as they are so different to the usual Hollywood blockbusters. They aren’t predictable and formulaic, they make you think and you can’t guess the ending.

QIf you weren’t an IT exec, what would you like to be?

A Absolutely no idea. I enjoy doing what I do and I know I’d miss it. I don’t

believe in retirement so I hope I’ll be doing this as long as I can.

QIn charge for the day, what world problem would you address?

A Mobile phone signals.

QGuess who’s coming to dinner – your five guests, (real or fictional)?

A Churchill, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Roger Federer and Mohammad Ali.

QYour hero or heroine from history?

A Hannibal of Carthage. He did things people thought were impossible like going across the Alps, traveling around Africa and taking on the Roman Empire. What he did in the Battle of Cannae was real David and Goliath stuff.

QYou’re hero or heroine alive and well?

A Roger Federer. Years ago he said: “Luckily I realised very young that I’d have to work hard at my genius.” That sums the guy up. He still works very hard and makes it look easy. He plays because he loves the game but has come to terms with the fact that as he gets older he is going to lose some.

QWhat’s the point of IT?

A Besides keeping me in a job, IT is the most fascinating industry to me.

It’s growing so quickly and it’s changing everyday. Consumers at home are buying products from companies we hadn’t heard of a few years ago and these new disruptive technologies are being brought into the corporate environment. Big IT companies are getting disrupted as a result and that is good for the customer.

QWhen it comes to energy resources (for data centres/IT) is the glass half-

empty or half-full?

A Modern technologies are becoming more energy efficient. Solution

footprints are a lot smaller than they were a few years ago and energy demands are decreasing.

QPet hates? A Egos.

QWhere does the time machine take you and why?

A OK. I’m sure I’m missing the point on this one but I would have to go to

Vegas in the 70s. I would have loved to be there watching Elvis or Frank Sinatra live in concert. That would have been amazing.
