If you can’t measure it then you won’t be able to monitor it

DCS talks to, Andy Mullings, Data Centre Business Development Manager at Synapsys, about the company’s background in building management systems and how this has provided a great opportunity to expand into the data centre monitoring and management space.

QPlease can you provide some background on the company?

A Synapsys was founded in 2001 serving over 400 customers to provide products and services to meet the growing customer demand for BMS interfaces that were low cost, as well as being quick and easy to commission. Provide products that the customer wants and with features that the customers will actually use and provide excellent customer support.

QWho are the key personnel involved in Synapsys?

A The two people that started the business are Harvey Roft, Managing Director and Andy Devine Technical Director. My role is to manage the data centre business and to help bridge the gap between IT and facilities.

QWhat are the key company milestones to date?

A Some of Synapsys key milestones would be working with CRAC unit manufacturers to provide Trend OEM controls including.. all the

main CRAC manufacturers. Providing HP, Talk Talk and other blue-chip companies with SIP interfaces and more recently rack power monitoring. In 2013 Synapsys starting to provide SIP data acquisition hardware for transferring data from BMS & SCADA systems to energy analytic supercomputers for data mining on how to get the best out of their data centres.

QIn general terms, how is Synapsys involved in the data centre space?

A Synapsys moved into the data centre space via system integrators that were installing BMS systems and needed to

interface products back to the BMS to get the data they needed. So we had a feel for what data centres required and then worked with our customers to build the product portfolio that the client actually needs.

For example the SIPp power monitoring was built out of a requirement a client had and then we quickly spotted that this was a market that Synapsys could grow into.
