Q SanDisk also offers PCIe and DIMM Flash technology?


A SanDisk offers fl ash on all interfaces. PCIe is a necessary solution for some environments, particularly those in which applications have high throughput requirements. There are also benefi ts to be had from the lower latency that PCIe offers in comparison to SAS and SATA.


Lightning® PCIe Enterprise Solid State Accelerators (SSAs) create connections between storage and server or workstation processors, accelerating application execution and maximizing performance. Lightning PCIe SSAs feature a proprietary controller to exponentially increase the ability to handle big data requests, alleviate I/O bottlenecks, and increase bandwidth. Lightning PCIe SSAs can be used as boot drives, or they can be combined with FlashSoft server-side caching software as a caching device for up to 3x greater application performance.


As mentioned, the SanDisk ULLtraDIMMTM Solid State Drive (SSD), the industry’s fi rst and only enterprise-class, ultra-low latency, memory channel storage solution. The ULLtraDIMM is the lowest latency fl ash storage device in the world, achieving fi ve microsecond write latency and reaching 150K random read and 65K random write IOPS. ULLtraDIMM is perfectly designed for a datacentre environment as combining multiple ULLtraDIMM drives in a single server scales performance linearly, a feat unprecedented in storage technology. This means it outperforms all previous fl ash storage devices, including PCIe-based drives.


ULLtraDIMM brings fl ash as close to the CPU as possible, by connecting it directly to the processor memory bus and utilising the existing DDR3 interface. This ensures ultra-low latency in business applications and results in improved application response times. Additional ULLtraDIMM SSDs can also be added to other available DIMM slots, scaling performance and capacity without impacting latency. At the launch of the ULLtraDIMM SSD, New York Based, real time transactional messaging specialist 60East tested its AMPS database using the ULLtraDIMM SSD, which leverages Memory Channel Storage (MCS) technology and compared performance against the fastest pre-ULLtraDIMM fl ash-based storage devices.


The tests demonstrated a signifi cant increase in the number of transactions possible per second. Using PCIe SSD technology 60East achieved 1.18 million transactions per second, the ULLtraDIMM SSD enabled an almost four fold increase in transactions, to 4.16 million transactions per second. The verdict was, “60East is excited by MCS. We know our demanding customers can use this performance to dramatically reduce latency in their messaging.”

With the inclusion of SanDisk’s Guardian Technology Platform, the ULLtraDIMM can leverage the lowest-cost 1xnm MLC fl ash available on the market while meeting the endurance needs of today’s write intensive and mixed-workload applications when using 4K aligned 4K transfer workloads. FlashSoft intelligent software running in the server can seamlessly incorporate server-based fl ash storage into the storage stack, executing I/O operations for the hottest data directly within the server. By coordinating the server-resident data with underlying storage, the software can prevent the problem of data being isolated from storage systems and their functions. And it requires no modifi cation to applications or the server OS and fully supports existing disk-based storage infrastructure.
