Light Meters from Basic to Advanced

ight meters are not only for photographers and movie makers. Today they are an important part of the arsenal of lighting engineers, building services professionals and facilities managers who want to be mindful of regulations.

L It is important to measure light and lux levels in the workplace because low light levels may cause

fatigue, muscle strain, and impaired work productivity, while excessive light levels like glare and reflected light can and affect employees’ vision.

Light meters will typically provide a luminance reading of either lux or foot-candles. Recommended light levels start from 20 lux for public areas, up to 200,000 lux for prolonged and exacting visual tasks of small pieces at low contrast. Offices are somewhere in the middle at 250-500 lux, while supermarkets may need lighting levels to be nearer to 750 lux. A hospital operating theatre may necessitate up to 1,500 lux.

Foxboro Field Devices “S” series pressure transmitter with patented FoxCal™ Technology

S

chneider Electric , a leading supplier of state of the art software, systems and control equipment to the world’s major industries recently released the new Foxboro I/A Pressure S Series Models IAP10S and IGP10S transmitters; smart transmitters that provide precise, reliable, measurement of absolute and gauge pressure and feature high performance and excellent stability. The ‘S’ Series reduce inventory costs with a wide range of applications that

traditionally require multiple separate transmitters; increase accuracy with the Foxboro patented multiple calibration technology and enable customers to accurately track time in service, which allows for predictive maintenance. “This is a totally unique new technology which contributes to precise reliable measurement, high performance and excellent stability.” Said Pat Cupo,

product

marketing manager at Schneider Electric. These are smart, loop powered HART devices that measure Gauge and Absolute pressure. They utilize a unique Foxboro patented Multiple Calibration technology called FoxCal ™. This feature eliminates the need for a traditional single span curve calibration at application specific pressure ranges. With 11 calibrations stored, the “S” series can automatically transition to the most appropriate and accurate calibration curve based on the transmitter input. The end result is a much more accurate pressure measurement at various turndowns. The new transmitters are also fitted with a Time in Service Meter which tracks number of days the transmitter has been powered up in the field. This allows the end user to track reliability more effectively and means more accurate predictive maintenance. “This is great news for our customers, said Matt Carrara, VP Field Devices, Schneider Electric, “this gives them the holy grail for any plant manager… Increased plant efficiency and increased process accuracy. Our customers can also reduce inventory because various sensor ranges normally required to keep in stock, spare parts.

can be replaced using one “S” sensor range,
