Enhancing enclosure performance

When used in industrial applications, enclosures will face a variety of hazards. To help, Spelsberg has developed a range of coatings designed to protect enclosures in all industries and environments

W

hen it comes to enclosures, meeting performance requirements is

essential, whether that is in regards to strength, security or ingress protection. In many applications, however, other factors need to be considered. For example, will the enclosure be able to offer protection from extreme temperatures, or might electrical interference be a problem once installed? Specifying an enclosure that exactly meets application demands is therefore essential to ensure the contents within is protected. There are, in fact, a vast number of

challenges experienced in enclosure specification, explains Chris Lloyd, managing director of Spelsberg UK. As a result, the company uses its enclosure expertise to not only provide the right enclosure, but to recommend customisations bespoke to the application. After-market coatings are one way in which the performance of enclosures can be enhanced.

COATING SOLUTIONS Spelsberg has developed a close relationship with a UK manufacturer that carries out research and development into polymer chemistry, enabling it to offer a new range of coating solutions to the enclosure market. The coatings can be applied to every

enclosure in Spelsberg’s range, no matter what the material, and are completely UV stable, waterproof and chemical resistant for long lasting performance. The company’s in-house chemists are able to manufacture new coating technology, bespoke to a customer’s specific requirements. The specialist coating service means the company can offer ESD (Electro Static Dissipation), EMI and RFI shielding which is ATEX approved. It can also provide fire resistant and thermal resistant (preventing heat transfer into the enclosure) coatings, as

well as an ‘Ice-Phobic’ solution which prevents ice from forming in even the coldest environments. Coatings are therefore being used to protect enclosures in all industries and environments, ranging from military applications, the pharmaceutical and food production industries, to installation in arctic environments. As an example, Spelsberg has supplied

components to the military which are Infra-Red Reflecting – or anti-radar. It has also developed a CARC coating which prevents the surface from picking up any chemical or biological particles which could be potentially harmful to human contact. In addition, anti- bacterial coatings are being used in food production and pharmaceutical applications.
