GETTING AROUND INDIA

After flying the 5,000 miles from the UK to India, frequent flyers can expect to put many more miles on the clock if they are seeking business in more than one destination.

Despite the demise of airlines such as Kingfisher and the costs incurred by rising oil prices, the choice of domestic airlines has expanded in recent years. This has been fuelled by a booming economy, the dereg- ulation of India’s aviation industry and the demands of a growing middle class. Six scheduled airlines provide connections

between the main centres, including Indian Airlines and Jet Airways, which offer a full service. They are supplemented by a growing number of budget carriers, among them JetKonnect, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir. In a volatile environment, local airlines are

facing yet more competition. The Indian authorities opened up the domestic market to foreign investment in 2012, and both budget carrier AirAsia India and full-service Tata-Singapore are planning to start operations on the subcontinent this summer. For shorter journeys, travel on the world’s

largest rail system is an option. Trains cover just about everywhere but can be crowded.
