Sponsored by: RHI Non-Domestic extension welcomed by industry
THE HPA (HEAT Pump Association) has welcomed the extension to the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) as a demonstration of the hard work that Trade Associations, including the HPA, have invested in working with DECC and other agencies such as OFGEM. This second phase of the Non-Domestic scheme significantly increases financial support for eligible GSHP systems and most importantly now includes Air
Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) which at 18 months since initial launch, is considered to be long overdue. “This is a clear
demonstration of the commitment and resolve of Trade Associations including the HPA to work with DECC for the continued development and extension of the RHI schemes, in this particular case Non-Domestic,” said Tony Bowen, president of the HPA. “We shall continue our work
A district star is born
DR ANDREW PEARSON and his Star team have received The Rittinger Medal for the world’s largest zero carbon 90°C ammonia district heat pump, which has been installed in Scandinavia but designed and manufactured in Glasgow by Star Refrigeration.
Dr Pearson received the award for his research, design and development work in the field of heat pump technology. His technology has made it possible to deliver heat at high temperatures using ammonia, a non-ozone depleting refrigerant with zero GWP, to run the system. The substitution of HFC gases for ammonia eliminates an equivalent of 800,000km in car travel from gases leaking to the atmosphere.
The industrial water heat pump design allowed an energy efficiency increase
of 25%, in comparison to conventional commercial heat pumps. It also permitted the use of renewable energy – hydroelectricity – ensuring the heat pump makes zero carbon heat available from a fjord.
The installation provides hot water and heating for the buildings, offices, schools, business and hospitals of the city of Drammen, a community near the capital city of Oslo with 63,000 people.
The 13MW industrial heat pump harvests heat from a local river and boosts it up to heat the equivalent of 6000 homes and 85% of the heat from the energy centre is fossil fuel free. It is expected that the government’s RHI will influence the take up of water heat pumps, which have the potential to eradicate fuel poverty.
post-launch with both DECC and OFGEM to further extend and improve both the Domestic and Non-Domestic schemes.” It is widely thought that this long awaited extension (Phase2) to the Non-Domestic scheme should go some way to help to redress an imbalance in the scheme whereby biomass dominates the small and medium sectors and, as a result, has had tariff reductions for new entrants applied several times since initial
scheme launch in November 2012. The increase in the GSHP tariff from 4.3p/kWh to 8.4p/kWh for the first 1314 full load equivalent hours and the first inclusion of ASHP in the scheme (@2.5p/kWh) will undoubtedly have a significant effect on the uptake of these technologies.
The only question is, will it be sufficient to grow the markets sustainably and/or meet EU renewable energy targets?
Keep cool and carry on
ANDREWS CHILLER HIRE, has developed a new versatile heat pump range which enables the company to hire out equipment designed to maintain reasonably constant, comfortable ambient temperatures in temporary structures.
The company says its heat pump hire service will have major benefits for event planners, exhibition organisers, wedding and party venues where additional temporary buildings are erected.
Event planners want their guests to enjoy their day, and have a memorable time. They don’t want people to get hot under the collar and leave meetings and functions early. Andrews says the simple, short-term solution for maintaining that ideal ambient temperature is to hire its new heat pump.
The company will advise on requirements, deliver and install the heat pump. The new purpose-designed heat-pump chillers have a reversing or three-way valve fitted.
This valve reverses the flow of refrigerant through the unit, the equipment role of the chiller being reversed; the evaporator becomes the condenser and the condenser becomes the evaporator.
Since the new heat pump is programmed to automatically switch operating cycles from heat to chill mode depending on prevailing temperatures, the units are not only ideal for temporary structures, they are also the heat pump hire solution for any large indoor space which has no heating or air conditioning system.
