Gardan Minicab

Scored and folded top decking pieces D1 through D3 (above left) are glued over the cardboard formers. The cowl (above right) is made of 1⁄2-inch carved balsa. The removable bottom cowl back attaches to the blind nuts in the back of the firewall. The windscreen (below left) is made of manila folder cardboard

then subsequently covered with aluminum MonoKote. A 1⁄8 × 1⁄4 inch balsa strip is glued to the back centerline of the windscreen for strength. The empennage assembly (below right) showing the balsa fairings at the fin and horizontal stabilizer intersection.

glued to the model while the bottom half is removable. The removable bottom half of the cowl has a 1⁄8-inch ply C1 former glued to the back. The two holes in C1 must align with the blind nuts in the firewall. Sand, carve and hollow the cowl to shape. Test fit the engine in the cowl and drill mounting holes. Use a shaft extension if needed to give adequate spinner clear- ance. Cut holes in the cowl block for the cylinder head, exhaust and needle valve. Seal the inside of the cowl and front of the firewall with epoxy.

Next glue the horizontal stabilizer to the fuselage. Notch the fuselage below the ele- vator dowel to assure smooth operation of the elevator. Notch the base of the fin over the elevator hinge to assure smooth eleva- tor motion. Finish the tail assembly by glu- ing the fin in place and add balsa fairings to either side at the base of the fin and sand to blend into the fuselage profile. Glue the wing to the fuselage. Make the main gear from 5⁄32-inch diameter wire as shown and attach to the wing with nylon

The completed model is now ready for painting and detailing. Building with cardboard leaves no open areas to cover. The model was first given two coats of clear dope followed by a light sanding with 400-grit sandpaper to remove any paper fuzz.

gear clips. Make the main gear fairings from 1⁄8-inch ply and attach to the gear wire with nylon gear clips. Bend the tail wheel strut from 3⁄32-inch wire as shown, place on the ply support, wrap with nylon thread, smear with glue and glue in the bottom of the aft portion of the fuselage cutout.
