2014 E-Fest


For the second year in a row, FLYING MODELS was proud to be the sponsor of the scale event and awarded the top three pilots with a suitable prize package (above left). Mark Sthil built this Stevens AeroModel Heath LNB-4 Parasol (above right) and modeled it after a full scale that is in the process of restoration at Mid America. Mark added details such as the dummy engine cylinders and


tail braces and subsequently won third place in the scale event. Tim Lavender chose a rather unusual model to build for the scale event much to everyone’s delight. The Bellanca Y1C-27 Aircruiser (below left) was scratchbuilt and covered in Japanese tissue. Mark Lanterman built a 1910 Eastbourne Monoplane (below right) that is now a kit from Retro RC.


that have been kit or scratchbuilt. As such ARFs or RTFs that have been modified are not allowed. The modelers are expected to present their models for static display and judging, and provide the three-views and documentation necessary to prove the mod- els scale fidelity.


Three judges were on hand to critique the models in both static and flight this year. No stranger to scale modeling, Dennis Crooks acted as Lead Judge. Joining him were Jim Ryan and your Associate Editor. Unfortu- nately a lot of builders got caught between projects this year and only four models were presented for static and flight judging. While participation was down this year, the modeling quality was still top notch. Flying is the most demanding aspect of

scale, and even though the indoor environ- ment is usually ideal, it can be just as nerve- wracking as flying outdoors. The entire flight line shuts down for the scale event, which takes place at 5:30. Pilots and specta- tors are then witness to some of the best builders and fliers in the nation.
