sda owner Walmart has announced that it could create 12,000 new jobs in the UK over the next five years. President and chief executive of Walmart, Doug McMillon, met with Prime Minister David Cameron at the Asda store in Clapham Junction in London on 7 April. Through a five-year strategy, Asda will continue to expand, creating jobs in parts of the country where it does not currently have stores.

Mr McMillon said: “A seismic shift in the structure of the retail market is underway – not just in the UK – but right across the world. Asda recognised the change in its market and took early action to develop and implement a strategy that will see it grow – creating more new jobs and bringing real value to more customers in the UK.” BHS is to launch a food offer that will undercut the major grocery retailers by 10%, according to reports in the national press. Sir Philip Green, chief of the Arcadia Group, to which BHS belongs, sees the increasingly competitive food sector as an opportunity. The first two BHS stores to begin selling food are reported to be Staines and Warrington, with an additional 140 outlets expected to follow. Aldi has been named Retailer of the Year at this year’s Retail Week Awards. It is the first time that the company has won the high profile accolade. A spokesperson for Aldi said: “We are extremely pleased with this award win and to be recognised by the retail industry.” The Co-operative Food has agreed a deal to lease 54 pub sites from the Marstons Plc public house portfolio owned by NewRiver Retail. chief executive of The Co- operative’s retail division, Steve Murrells, revealed that the food business plans to open more than 100 new convenience stores this year.


This is the first major lease agreement that the business has secured since that announcement. The Co- operative Group is currently expanding with the aim of opening 150 food stores nationwide a year. Sainsbury’s raised £6,508,010 for this year’s Sport Relief campaign, which it says was the biggest donation on the night and £1m higher than its total in 2012. Outgoing chief executive, Justin King, took part in his own challenge for Sport Relief, which involved running a mile at 17 different locations around the UK, and ended with a run, swim and cycle at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. More than 1,000 Sainsbury’s staff also ran a mile with him.

Tesco has entered into an agreement with Trent Limited, part of the Tata Group, to form a 50:50 joint venture in Trent Hypermarket Limited (THL), which operates the Star Bazaar retail business in India. The UK retailer will invest around £85m in the business and completion of the deal is subject to the necessary approvals. Once the deal is concluded, THL will operate 12 stores selling a range of merchandise.


The stores are run under the Star Bazaar and Star Daily banners and extend across the Southern and Western regions of India. Tesco has had an agreement to supply merchandise and provide technical knowhow and support to THL in India since 2008. Morrisons has reported a pre-tax loss of 176m for the year ending 2 February, compared with profit of 879m for 2012/13. According to its preliminary results, the grocer


saw a 2% fall in turnover to £17.7bn, compared with £18.1bn a year earlier. Like- for-like sales excluding fuel and VAT were down by 2.8% and underlying pre-tax profit declined by 13% to £785m. Chief executive Dalton Phillips revealed that a strategic review of the business has been undertaken which has included an ‘enhanced focus’ on the core supermarket business and major investment in the proposition of £300m in 2014/15. The strategy also includes a planned exit from non-core activities, including Kiddicare and Fresh Direct. Mr Phillips said: “We are significantly reducing our cost base and will invest £1bn into our proposition over the next three years, to improve our value even further and to defend and strengthen our competitive position.” Sainsbury’s has reported its first fall in sales for nine years in its fourth quarter trading statement for the 10 weeks to 15 March. Total sales for the quarter fell by 1.5% and like-for-like sales were down by 3.8%.


Waitrose is to open a national distribution centre, which will be developed by Gazeley, at its Magna Park development in Milton Keynes in Summer 2015. It is in talks to transfer the operation at the nearby Kuehne+Nagel-run Celestia depot, which services Waitrose, to the national distribution centre. The new distribution centre will be the size of 12 Premiership football pitches and will handle the distribution of around 25,000 nationally available grocery and home department lines that can be found in Waitrose branches and on Waitrose.com.
