Obviously, if the machine has come from a member state country where it was originally placed on the market, then this is straightforward, and the CE Marking and Certification that was supplied with the machine originally is still valid.


The situation, however, is totally different for machines originally placed on the market outside of the EU — Asia, for example. These machines coming into the GB market do not comply and, in a lot of cases, are un-economical to convert in order to make them compliant from a legal perspective.

We are often asked to confirm the


identity of machines and, more importantly, the CE Marking of machines that have come into the GB market by different


routes from various parts of the world.

The main issue in this area is the fact that the machine needs to comply with the current legislation at the time that the machine enters the EU markets, therefore, a machine originally sold in 2012 to a non CE regulated market and then entering GB in 2014 will have to comply with the latest Stage IV Engine regulations. The cost of modifying this to a stage of compliance will seriously outweigh the economics of the initial lower priced import.


Unfortunately, we do have what appears to be a growing industry of people selling a service to CE mark non-compliant machines.


I am sorry to say that whilst the documentation looks completely legitimate and the machine is fitted with a nice shiny plate sporting the CE mark, this in effect is a totally worthless exercise with the owner of the non-compliant machine effectively wasting his money.


One of the main reasons for this is that with the certification process there has to be a direct link to the technical file for the machine from the manufacturer. I can assure you that neither Volvo, nor any other OEM, will make this information available to those other than trusted and registered partners.


Please be aware that there are Volvo machines in this market that do not meet the requirements of the current Machinery Directive, therefore, if you have any reason to suspect that you are buying, or even hiring equipment, that looks as if it has a non-genuine CE Mark applied, please contact us and we will only be too happy to confirm its original identity.
