One of EMN’s EC140Ds at work at the Total gas plant, Sullom Voe

is due to the level of support we enjoy from Volvo CE and in particular Neil Bruce, their mobile engineer for the far north of Scotland.” The latest addition is the third EC27C to be purchased by EMN and joins other Volvo compact excavators including an EC18C and ECR48C models.

EMN Plant can trace its routes back to 1972 when Proprietor and Managing Director Edmund Magnus Nicolson established Nicolson Plant, one year before the huge BP oil terminal commenced construction on Shetland. Trading in an Austin Maxi and topping up funds by selling a cow Edmund and his Father purchased their first machine, a Massey Ferguson 50 backhoe loader for just £4800! Almost immediately his fledgling

company was immersed in the development of the oil industry on the island and besides supplying plant, labour and materials for road building, local infrastructure and development the company expanded into general haulage and quarrying.

The business was sold to a quarrying consortium in 2003 and in 2008 Edmund and his sons setup EMN Plant Ltd from scratch. The family run business is based at Sella Ness, Shetland and just two miles from the Sullom Voe oil terminal and Total’s new Shetland Gas Plant, has ensured its continuity with Edmund’s three sons, Ellis, Christopher and Martyn who have grown up with their father’s business and now take part in running it. Not only does EMN supply operated and non-operated plant for hire, it continues to carry out its own contracts mainly for the giant oil and gas companies on the island – namely BP and Total. In addition to that the company started up quarrying operations at nearby Scatsta for supplying stone and sub base materials and recently invested in mobile crushing equipment. The company also has a long standing contract to supply pole erecting plant for emergency breakdowns on power lines with SSE PLC.
