Those music teachers who have served as field experience or student teaching cooperating teachers give a great gift to university programs and the next gen- eration of music teachers. Your level of experience, dedication, mentorship and pride is an essential element for young educators to see and absorb. You become

the rays of sun that will push young sprouts to bud forth into a beautiful, new generation of music teachers.

Some ideas that music teachers can use to help potential teachers enter and negotiate a music education program with greater success:

1. Strong basic skills in reading, math and writing at the entry to university can mean an opportunity to bypass courses.

2. Mentor a potential candidate in music theory and piano skills.

3. Ask yourself if the student has the ‘heart’ of a teacher?

4. Encourage your student to get back- ground and experience with children.
