“In ecology, sus- tainability is how biological systems endure and remain diverse and produc- tive.”
~ Wikipedia
The irony is that I read that just before
I wrote this on – you guessed it – the first full day of spring. After making it through another extreme Wisconsin winter, I am amazed by how our natural resources once again take on new life.
Perhaps the same can be said about people. We are also capable of weathering difficult conditions and even through repetitive cycles, adapting to the changes around us as necessary, while still finding ways to grow. From veteran master teachers to our new crop of music educators, growth often means avoiding status quo and find- ing creative ways to achieve our goals, all while being accountable to new high standards.
And that’s where it begins with this issue of WSM. It is our strong sense of purpose combined with passion that keeps our flame alive in the most challenging times and enables us to be a sustainable and pro- ductive part of the educational system.
Like in ecology, sustainability doesn’t have to mean surviving alone… it can be about thriving together. Working collec- tively provides a better “whole,” making outreach more important than ever… to each other, our administrations, our com- munities and most of all – our students. We ultimately have the reach to pass the torch and effect as many people as pos- sible with the benefits of a quality music education. It’s rewarding to know that what’s passed along is for LIFE!
