WMEA News Jim Scheuer, WMEA President-Elect 2014 State Music Conference

WMEA is once again in the planning stages for the next Wis- consin State Music Conference, which will be held October 29 through November 1, 2014. This year’s conference theme will be “Music – Creating Connections.” The annual conference planning session took place on January 4. At that time mem- bers prioritized the sessions and presenters that they would like included in the conference. Efforts will be made to ensure that sessions which touch on current educational themes and how they relate to music classrooms are included. In a continued ef- fort to promote attendance at the conference, there will again be outreach to school administrators to keep them informed about the incredible professional development opportunities the state conference provides to music educators.

WMEA Membership Campaign

At the January WMEA Council meeting, WMEA membership chair Kati Seiter unveiled a new effort to reach out to non- member music educators throughout the state to encourage them to join the association. While the main part of this campaign will be implemented through personal contact by members of

the Council, WMEA leadership also encourages all members to reach out to their colleagues who may not be members.

Membership information can be found on the WMEA website at http://www.wmea.com/member-application. This page will connect you to further information about the benefits of WMEA and National Association for Music Education (NAfME) mem- bership and includes a link to the NAfME online membership registration (http://musiced.nafme.org/join/).

Of course, non-members who are reading this article are encour- aged to join WMEA directly by using the links above! Your membership can help make both WMEA and NAfME strong and lasting advocates for music students and educators throughout the state and nation.

New NAfME Advocacy Campaign

NAfME recently launched a new music education advocacy brand and website called, “Broader Minded,” which takes an in- novative look at the true value of music education and challenges assumptions about music’s often-perceived supplemental role in the curriculum. Broader Minded cites benefits such as skills and personal attributes like self-discipline, reflective learning and emotional awareness – skills that allow individuals to maximize both their personal success and their contri- butions to the 21st

century workforce. The

new website at www.BroaderMinded.com features an interactive model that illustrates these benefits with actual stories submit- ted by students, parents and teachers. The site also allows users to join the Broader Minded movement, access new advocacy materials and share their own stories about the value of music education.

NAfME Elections

Elections for National Association for Mu- sic Education (NAfME) president-elect and several regional president-elect positions were held in January and February. Of interest to WMEA members – the 2014- 16 NAfME national president-elect will be Denese Odegaard from North Dakota, and the 2014-16 North Central Division president-elect will be current WMEA President Leyla Sanyer. Congratulations Leyla!

These national and division presidents- elect will take office one week prior to the National Assembly in June 2014.
