In the Center July 14-15 – Music in Education – Kathy Punwar
This course is designed for music teachers who have inherited a Yamaha MIE system (MIE-1 or XG system), but never received official training. This is a perfect opportunity to see what the MIE curriculum and technology can do for you and your students. Participants will have hands on experiences with both curriculum and technology.
July 14-15 - iPads in the Music Classroom Chris Russell
This workshop will begin with basic topics to familiarize participants with the iPad and its operating system. Basic topics will be expanded upon and specific software will be discussed in depth. Participants are encouraged to come with a lot of questions and be open for discussion and app sharing. Participants will leave with shared resources they can use in the classroom the following year.
July 16-17 – Technology in Music Education Chris Russell
Workshop will cover different technology platforms and how they can be used in music education. There’s something here for everybody, whether you operate with Chromebook, MacBook, iPad, Android, Windows or other technology.
July 21-22 – Improvisation in Every Classroom Matt Turner and Fred Sturm
Bring your instruments! This workshop offers accessible, hands-on and user- friendly improvisation classroom techniques for band, orchestra, choir and general music teachers. Learn to improvise in and introduce your students to different styles using Baroque, Arabic taqasim, contemporary classical, jazz, blues, rock and non-style specific approaches. We will also develop improvi- sations into compositions and other performance-based projects.
July 23-24 – Percussion for the Non-Percussionist Cindy Terhune
Create a stellar percussion section! This hands-on workshop will cover the basics of each concert percussion instrument group, including quality sound production, grip styles, basic technique and literature. Other topics will include setting up your percussion section and keeping your percussionists interested and well behaved.
July 28-29 – Finale Notation Software, Level 1 Mavis Kallestad
Learn how to use Finale 2014 notation software to create the music and mate- rials you need for your music programs and performance groups. See how easily you can enter notes (with or without a MIDI keyboard), arrange, edit, listen to and print your music with professional quality results. Participants will receive “hands-on” sequential step-by-step instruction in a lab setting.
July 29-30 – SMART Board Basics and Beyond for the Music Educator – Tim Lutz
Do you have a SMART Board and want to know how to start? Do you use a SMART Board but are looking for more ideas on how to enhance students learning in your music classes? This hands-on SMART Board workshop is designed for the music educator from beginner through intermediate levels of knowledge.
July 30-31 – Finale Notation Software, Level 2 Mavis Kallestad
Get up-to-date on the new features and enhancements in Finale 2014. Learn shortcuts, metatools and plug-ins that will help you work more efficiently and increase your productivity. Participants will receive “hands-on” sequential step-by-step instruction in a lab setting.

Aug 4-8 – Band Instrument Repair – Gary Everett (in partnership with VanderCook College of Music)
Watch your in- strument repair bills shrink after learning the basics of woodwind and brass instrument repair. Participants are encouraged to bring instruments to work on. This class is open to both beginning and advanced students.
August 6-7 – Vocal Jazz Institute – Kirby Shaw Discover vocal jazz! For its 10th
year running, the Vocal Jazz Institute will
feature Wisconsin’s best vocal jazz educators in a series of hands-on work- shops dedicated to improving skills and increasing confidence in teaching vocal jazz. Two separate tracks will be offered to ben- efit those who already have some experience in vocal jazz, and mentoring will be avail- able for new vocal jazz directors. This year wel- come guest clinician, Kirby Shaw, sponsored by Hal Leonard.
August 11-12 – Sibelius Notation – DeWayne Roberson Learn to use Sibelius or refresh your skills in this friendly, hands-on workshop.
August 14-15 – Middle School Band Workshop Chris Gleason
Looking for an opportunity to meet and work with other middle school band directors? This workshop will include discussion and interactive experiences centered on age-appropriate repertoire, curriculum development, recruitment, retention, advocacy, commissioning, creative warm-ups, assessment, out- come development, strategy sharing, instrumentation and developing com- prehensive musicianship in middle school students. Participants should bring their primary instrument to the workshop.
August 14 – Disciplinary Literature & SLOs in the Arts Julie Palkowski
Workshop participants will discuss what disciplinary literacy (DL) is, how we utilize DL tools in the arts and what resources are available to support art skills and knowledge through DL tools. Discussion will continue on Arts Standard Updates, Educator Effectiveness plans and Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). The day concludes with a working session, which will include samples of arts Student Learning Outcomes and time to write SLOs in the arts.
August 21 – Train the Trainer – Julie Palkowski
Learn some facilitator strategies and about some tools that you may use to help coordinate professional development sessions in your own district. Julie Palkowski of DPI will guide you through a variety of topics and resources, such as Disciplinary Literacy Tools in the Arts, Student Learning Objectives in the Arts and online arts resources focused a variety of Professional Learning Community Topics.
