rought over the last 3 years has prompted a renewed effort to keep animal numbers in balance with available forage. A wealth of information has been published and provided in oral presentations that propose a variety of grazing strategies,
suggest how to grow more pasture forage, and recommend proper stocking rate determinations. Presented information provides the science of range management and the proper application of this information is the art of range management. Most beef cattle producers have the ability to look at a herd of cattle
and determine the health and nutritional status of each individual animal. They have developed this art and skill by observing cattle over a number of years and learning their behavior under different situations. In contrast, a lesser number of ranchers can assess range condition
through visual observation and as a result they are unable to apply the science of range management effectively. To be good range managers, producers must train themselves to notice changes in forage quantity and quality, and recognize the triggers for adjusting stocking rates.
