BRANGUS SECTION
and it has been important to use multi-trait bulls. Phe- notype is also important. “I don’t want so much performance packed into
our herd that I have 1,400-pound females. In our area, we can’t support those big cows. I want to see a little more growth spread between birth weight and wean- ing weight than between weaning weight and yearling weight. “Structure is also important. Our females need to
get out and be able to cover this area, so I look at feet and legs. I want a moderate-frame bull, deep bodied, heavy boned, that has a pretty long neck, and I want his females to have a pretty, feminine look to them.” Kinslow also looks for moderate-frame bulls that
are “deep, correct in their structure and can travel. I look for a bull with a lot of meat and that is correct in their joints and knees, big-boned and big-footed, that can hold up and travel.” Kinslow says the three- eighths Brahman infl uence of Brangus allows the cattle to “handle the climate, humidity and insects better.”
What are the top attributes you look for in a bull supplier? Critendon says, “I want to establish a relationship
with that individual. I want someone who is interested in improving his herd so that he can help advance my herd as well as others’.” Kinslow has a list of attributes. “One, I want some-
one who can be honest with me. Two, I want someone who is constantly trying to improve their program. I want someone who is branching out and using dif- ferent herd sires, and using different technologies to help improve their program like using and tracking EPDs, using gain tests, and some now are using feed effi ciency tests. In my opinion the feed effi ciency tests are probably the most important because the cheaper we can feed our cattle, the more profi t we gain. Three, I want someone who follows up with me and cares about my operation and wants to know how my calf crop is doing.” Neal says, “I buy from people that have been in the
business a long time, and all the people I buy bulls from are all good people. I like to fi nd bulls that are raised in my area. This past year I bought about 30 bulls. I could call [my suppliers] and I know they’re going to tell me the truth. You can tell by talking to these people that they’re going to stand by their word.”
