Town of Surfside Beach FIRST RESPONDERS
The mission of the Surfside Beach Fire Depart-
ment is to preserve life and property in the com- munity by providing services directed at the pre- vention and control of fires, accidents and other medical emergencies, while maintaining the high- est standards of professionalism, efficiency and effectiveness. Seven career firefighters and more than 30 volunteer firefighters serve the Town of Surfside Beach.
After the new town’s incorporation in 1964, a
volunteer fire department was organized. To pay for the first fire truck, a scooter was raffled on the 4th of July. The community rallied and enough money was raised to purchase a 1920 American LaFrance 750 GPM Pumper. A new fire house soon followed and the fire department moved

into its new home on January 7, 1965. David Wiggins was the first Surfside Beach Fire Chief.
Today, the Surfside Beach Fire Department is
located at 810 1st Avenue North and provides fire and EMS service, as well as community outreach. Two programs started in the past year include the “Neighbors Saving Neighbors” program which of- fers CPR instruction, and the Junior Firefighter Program educates youth in fire protection and promotes community service through training, leadership, moral character and self-discipline.
The public is welcome to stop by and see the Fire
Station and an original 1920 restored antique fire engine, or as Chief Dan Cimini says, “The bay door is always open!”
