ful sights, but the most recognizable landmark of this small town is surely the pier. From firewoks to the highly anticipated Family Festival, this is the place to be during town events, and nothing beats a walk on the 750-foot pier for the best view in town. Be sure to go all the way to the end, and talk to a fisherman or two to see what’s biting. You may want to rent a fishing rod and try your luck! Each year, it is estimated that more than 250,000 people visit the Surfside Pier. From the season pass hold- ers who fish throughout the seasons, the occasion- al fishermen, or those who just enjoy a leisurely stroll, everyone loves the pier.

This pier was originally built in 1953, but was de- stroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954 and again by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. In 1992, the pier was again badly damaged by a winter storm, but was rebuilt in 1993. A group of wealthy businessmen built the first pier and later sold it to the Tillman Family, who then sold it to the Holliday Family. Af- ter the pier was destroyed the third time, the Scal- ise Family bought it. Today, this icon of Surfside Beach is owned by the town. It has a bait and tack- le shop that also sells novelty items, an ice cream shop, and a full-service restaurant serving break- fast, lunch and dinner. The pier was made ADA compliant in 2013
