PRESERVING NATURES’ BEAUTY IN THE TOWN OF Surfside Beach
The beauty of the Town of Surfside Beach is
a source of pride for residents, and the town’s Beautification Committee works year round to preserve and enhance the areas’ natural beauty. Working with town leadership, the Department of Public Works exists to proactively manage the town’s resources in a manner to benefit the town, its residents, businesses and visitors. Depart- ment employees provide safe streets, sidewalks, beaches, lakes, parks, recreation and civic activi- ties along with sanitation services in order to pre- serve and enhance the quality of life in the Town of Surfside Beach. The stunning Surfside Drive business area is the largest recent project, but there are many others.
Decks have been built over lakes in three areas
of the town to balance the aesthetics of the area and allow passersby to sit and enjoy the beauty of nature. Pictured above is one on Dogwood Lake.
28 This season, decorative and colorful hanging
baskets will hang from the streetlights from 3rd Avenue North to 3rd Avenue South on Ocean Bou- levard. These lovely plants will also hang in the peir area and in the first block of Surfside Drive. Flower beds have been installed in public areas that are maintained with seasonal and perennial blooms, giving public areas an attractive, urban feel.
The Glenns Bay Road Widening and Inter-
change Project will add additional sidewalks with stamped concrete to blend with the design of the Surfside Drive business district. The project will also widen a mile of the existing road to five lanes and construct a grade-separated interchange on Highway 17 Business, making traffic flow move more smoothly.
