PRESENT PATH
TO THE then & now 1700 S tanding on the shore of beautiful Surf-
side Beach, it’s easy to imagine a time when our prehistoric ancestors called this area home. Evidence of large animal remains found on a construction site suggests that the first inhabitants were hunters that came to this area more than fourteen thou- sand years ago. Before the arrival of Euro- peans, Native Americans camped, fished and made use of the area’s rich bounty for centuries. Fast forward to the year
1800
our country gained its independence and records show that American Naturalist, William Bartram, traveled through Surf- side Beach on his way from Charleston to Little River, following the “hard sands of the ocean beach.” On his southern tour of the coastal zone of South Carolina, in 1791, George Washington recorded in his diary details of passing through the area and dining with “Mr. Pauley” in the area of Garden City Beach.
