Entitled the “Streetscape Project,” it was bundled
with the build out of North Poplar Park, which is a .34-acre green area adjacent to the downtown block. North Poplar Park (recently renamed T.J. “Bill” Harrison Memorial Park, in honor of the town’s first mayor) is the piece of property ex- changed with the Department of Interior to en- able the Horry County Library expansion. Today, this area has two benches, a metal sculpture as the focal point, a pathway with landscaping on both sides, and extra green-space. The parking area that serves the park has an electric car-charging station for public use, in keeping with the Town’s desire to offer green choices wherever possible.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Sat-
urday, June 11, 2011, on Surfside Drive, represent- ing the culmination of a $400,000 project designed to enhance the downtown area. Improvements included making all business entrances on one level, widening the sidewalks to 18 feet, install- ing brick edging, installing an island in the center of the road, replacing all of the trees with species less invasive to infrastructure, adding tree grates and up-lighting, moving the electric underground, installing new light poles, and installing ADA com- pliant crosswalks. Speed bumps and an in-ground sound system were added after the initial project was completed.
