MEANWHILE IN... CHINA
Sales of the second developer kit for the Oculus Rift are halted following fears of scalping by third-party resellers in the region
SALES of the Oculus Rift in China have been suspended due to a large number of purchasers selling them onto consumers at an increased price. The Rift Development
Kit 2 (DK2) is currently available to pre-order on Oculus’ site for $350, but Chinese resellers have already been off ering the unreleased hardware at infl ated prices. Taobao, the Chinese
equivalent of eBay, has units from multiple sellers available, with prices ranging from anywhere between $450 and $600. One seller’s profi le states that it has sold over 79 units of the DK2.
“We’ve had to suspend sales in China due to extreme reseller purchases,” said Oculus customer service lead Kevin Crawford. “We need to make sure
that we are doing what we can
to make sure that resellers that are looking to fl ip our product for a profi t are not taking stock away from legitimate developer purchases globally.”
