1. Sony didn’t believe in PlayStation Former PlayStation US boss Steve Race had previously alluded to this, but to hear Mr. PlayStation himself confi rm it makes it all the more real.

“PlayStation was initially viewed negatively from large parts of Sony,” said PlayStation CEO Andrew House in an on-stage interview with MCV publisher Michael French. “Nobody wanted to be part of it

except for me. When I moved to SCE, my then boss said I was an idiot: why would I want to work on a toy? He said: ‘It will never be a major part of Sony’s business.’”

2. Don’t be Peter Molyneux In a panel aimed at indie devs, PR expert Simon Byron shared tips on how to promote a game. The core part of the message was to share everything with everyone. Be open and honest and gamers will respond positively. But he also had one other piece of sage advice: don’t become Peter Molyneux and over-promise but under-deliver. “No more room for bullshit because being cryptic doesn’t pay off ,” he said.

3. Let kids teach eachother New Creative Industries Champion Ian Livingstone took to the Develop Conference to discuss how to improve education for creators. He recommended asking children to teach their classmates, claiming peer-to-peer learning can improve performance by 30 per cent. “In schools we focus too much on the computational nature rather than the how, the when and the why,” he said. He added that for just £15m, the Government could give every kid in the UK a Raspberry Pi computer.

4. Developers were right to criticise Xbox over social media The head of Xbox’s indie developer division (ID@Xbox) Chris Charla said it is right for developers to give feedback via social media. The fi rm came under fi re last

year from indie devs who felt Xbox One was not supportive of their businesses. “I’m really happy to be under the hard light of Twitter, even if it’s painful sometimes,” said Charla.

He added: “Being out there and having a direct relationship with the community is essential.” Charla also revealed that Xbox

were looking at ways of making indie games more visible on its marketplace.

5. Don’t beat up your players in VR Patrick O’Luanaigh, CEO of VR developer NDreams, told attendees that slower-paced games work best in VR, and that studios have to be careful with how they treat players in their titles. He stressed that devs must

remember VR users are ‘real people, not avatars’. This means thinking more carefully about what they’re doing to the player. The example he gave was any situation where objects will hit the player character in the face, such as by smashing through a window. This can seem exciting in a traditional title, but it can be jarring as players will move to protect their face. It will also emphasise that

they’re playing a game. O’Luanaigh believes that players “don’t want to be reminded you’re not really there”.
